COLUMBUS
COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Commissioners in Craven County voted Monday morning to pass
and send a resolution to Raleigh saying they support a voter ID bill. Monday night, commissioners in Columbus
County will discuss the same issue.
Commissioners
decided to put the voter ID bill on the agenda after they received an email
from officials in Gatson county asking for input. Commissioner Amon McKenzie believes there are
bigger issues for state lawmakers to focus their attention instead.
"I would think that
our legislators would have a more pressing matter," said McKenzie. "I think they can be looking at job bills as
opposed to voter ID bills."
McKenzie believes the
bill would be a hindrance, if anything.
"We
spend all this time and energy trying to encourage young people and seniors to
go vote and I can see this being an obstacle to prevent them from voting," said
McKenzie.
Supporters
of the bill said it would crack down on voter fraud and stop people from voting
more than one time. According to
McKenzie, there hasn't been a drastic problem with any of those issues. He sees the bill as a political move.
Commissioner
Edwin Russ also said he would be against the voter ID bill. Charles McDowell said he's not against the
bill, but wants to hear both sides of the argument.
